Why does M&S charge for carrier bags?

In accordance with the law, we charge 5p for single use carrier bags issued in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England.

In Northern Ireland we're obliged to pay the charge directly to Government.

In Wales, Scotland and England the 5p minus VAT will be split with half going to local charities and community causes chosen by our stores and the other half going to a selection of national charities that we have worked with for many years including MacMillan Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Now and the Marine Conservation Society.

You may prefer to buy one of our 10p ‘Bag for Life’ bags, which are made from 100% recycled materials. We will replace this free of charge when it wears out and also recycle your old bag.
